 ✔ The dying slave is one of the cycle of sculptures by the great Michelangelo, which he created in 1513-1519 as a decoration for the tombstone of Pope Julius II. It has a double meaning, in some sources it is noted that the work symbolizes not death, but sleep (accordingly, not a dying, but a falling asleep slave). Part of a series of 6 "slaves", this plaster sculpture symbolizes one of the territories conquered by Julius II.

 However, the monument was not included in the composition of the tombstone, but instead was donated to King Francis and soon became part of the collection of the Louvre in Paris, where it is located to this day. This plaster statue has significant dimensions, its height reaches 223 centimeters. According to art critics, it carries a deep inner meaning - combining in a single feeling the bitterness of death and the joy of gaining the long-awaited freedom. The Louvre also houses another work from this series (The Bound Slave), and four unfinished monuments are displayed in the gallery of the Accademia City of Florence.
